Brigid & Bess Opens

Charlottesville, VA (September 15, 2021) – Dairy Market, the first market hall concept in Central Virginia, announced today the opening of a 2,000 square foot home decor and gifts retailer, Brigid & Bess.

“When we first started conceptualizing Dairy Market, we knew we wanted more than just a place for a great meal. We also wanted to build a robust retail offering for local families and guests,” said Chris Henry, President of Stony Point Design Group and developer of the Dairy Market.

Owned and operated by Leah Donahue, the Brigid & Bess boutique looks to adorn today’s modern homes and inspire conversation among families and friends. Items are sourced from local and global makers, including candles, cards, picture frames, pillows, puzzles, and more. Donahue also plans on offering creative workshops in the coming months, such as flower arranging and still life painting.

“Dairy Market is quickly becoming a central gathering space for the community; it was important to me that the brand felt connected to the building,” said Donahue.  “I was inspired by St. Brigid, the patron saint of dairy workers, and then discovered that the original architect’s wife was named Bessie. It felt like a perfect fit.”

Donahue previously owned a similar independent store in Alexandria, Virginia, before moving to Charlottesville with her husband and two children in August of 2020.

“While COVID-19 presented many obstacles to small business owners, it also helped to reinvigorate the shop local movement. I think we’ll see more and more locally-owned brick and mortar stores in the coming year,” said Donahue.

“We are excited to welcome Leah and her team to our growing group of diverse merchants,” said Don Davis, Dairy Market General Manager. “Brigid & Bess has such a uniquely warm and vibrant space; we can’t wait to see what’s to come.”
