CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — After the COVID-19 pandemic derailed plans for a grand opening last year, Dairy Market was finally able to celebrate in an official way.

On Thursday, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official grand opening of the new Charlottesville business hub.

People came from all over the state to celebrate.

There are multiple vendors inside the location offering a variety of products and food styles.

“I think when you come to the Dairy Market, you want to have a sense of adventure, whether you want a cup of coffee or you want a slice of pizza or even a fine meal sitting down, or go to Starr Hill Brewery,” said Rita McClenny, the CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

Some people are excited about the location due to the fact that it will connect the Downtown Mall to the University of Virginia Grounds.

Others are concerned that all the changes around the area will push out people living in the community.

“We are going to have to figure out ways that we are not pushing the current community out,” said Charlottesville Vice-Mayor Sena Magill. “The current community is already feeling pressure.”

She also says the city wants to make sure that with all the economic growth in the community, the people who currently live there will not be pushed out by increasing property values.

The city also wants to make sure community members are able to benefit from the economic growth.
