Market Monday: Salvation Army

December 20, 2021

Mondays in December – December 6, 13, 20, 27

Market Mondays is the Dairy Market’s program to support local community groups. The Dairy Market partners monthly with a local community group for Dine Out Donations on Mondays.

We will partner with one charity or non-profit per month and on Mondays at the Dairy Market guests will be able to add $1 to their orders, with that dollar donated to the month’s selected group, or guests may purchase designated menu items which proceeds go to the charity or non-profit (example: Starr Hill’s LOVE beer).

DECEMBER MARKET MONDAYS PARTNER: THE SALVATION ARMY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE

The Charlottesville Corps of The Salvation Army was established in 1912 as a place where someone in need in the city could go to get a hot meal and free lodging for the night. The Salvation Army Charlottesville Corps includes a weekly schedule of programs and opportunities for worship for adults and children. For more about The Salvation Army of Charlottesville click here.

Dedicated Salvation Army of Charlottesville programs include:

The Soup Kitchen. Located in downtown Charlottesville, the Soup Kitchen provides more than 50,000 hot meals each year. This in keeping with the mission of The Salvation Army, which is “to meet human needs without discrimination.” We are grateful to more than 30 groups made up of clubs, student groups, area churches and their congregations/mission teams for providing food and volunteers to serve these meals through our kitchen, some for up to 40 years and more.

The Emergency Shelter is a 58-bed shelter available for overnight stay or for stays of several weeks or months at a time. There is no charge for the service. Residents are given linens, three free meals a day, and casework when needed. We assist the residents in finding employment, saving their money, and locating suitable housing.

The Center of Hope Transitional Housing Program opened in 1994, there are nine one- and two-bedroom apartments in a two-story building located at 207 Ridge Street. Guests share a furnished apartment, food service through our world-famous soup kitchen, and set life-changing goals. A waiting list is maintained as this program fills quickly. This program is based on prior success as a resident of the shelter and a holistic approach working with the Corps Officers and corps staff.

Emergency Social Services Program The Salvation Army also helps those in the surrounding community who are in need of emergency social services, located at 207 Ridge Street and open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dominion EnergyShare BILL PAYMENT ASSISTANCE applies to any heating/cooling source within Dominion Virginia Power’s service territory. Using “Contact Us” or sending an email does NOT reserve funds for this program. Applications must be in person at our 207 Ridge Street office. Payments go directly to energy vendors, and every cent donated goes to benefit those in need because Dominion and The Salvation Army pay for the program’s administrative expenses in order to provide these funds for those in need. Funds come from tax-deductible donations from customers, stockholders, employees, EnergyShare Partners and Dominion. Funds are distributed through a network of nonprofit health and human service agencies.

Our Salvation Army Family Store, located at 604 Cherry Avenue, offers used furniture, adult and children’s clothing and shoes, appliances and electronic equipment, books, videos, tapes, kitchen utensils, lamps, and other items at very reasonable prices. Donated vehicles are sold at auction. Hours of business for both stores are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., closed on Sundays. Please call (434) 979-5230 to ask about items we are able to pick up. All proceeds of the Family Store go to support a major portion of the overall operating budget of the Charlottesville Corps of The Salvation Army.

The Emergency Disaster Unit, sometimes known as the “Canteen” or the “Soup Kitchen on Wheels,” is available to community emergency disaster response organizations to provide support to emergency personnel in the field for an extended period of time. The community never knows when disaster will strike (missing person search, fire, hurricanes, hazardous material spills, etc), but it can count on the Emergency Disaster Unit of The Salvation Army for its support at a moment’s notice.
