The world is changing for the better, and everyone is looking for ways to support black- and brown-owned businesses across the nation. Richmond, Va. has recently launched BLK RVA, a tourism campaign that highlights and celebrates the black cultural experience in the region, and along with the Black Restaurant Experience, showcasing African-American owned businesses and their local flavors and cuisines. Once you start traveling again, or if you live in the neighborhood, here are some amazing spaces to check out.

Pig and Brew is a neighborhood barbecue restaurant and bar owned by Lamarr Johnson and Lamont Hawkins providing Richmond with the authentic tastes of North Carolina-style barbecue. Pig and Brew is available for carry-out, online ordering, DoorDash, UberEats and PostMates from Wednesday – Saturday 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mama J’s is a family-operated restaurant located in historic African American Jackson Ward neighborhood offering Richmond’s premier soul food and celebrating the family tradition of going to grandma’s house for Sunday dinner. Currently, Mama  J’s is available from Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. to order pick-up on Mama J’s website and available for delivery through DoorDash.

Good Tymes is an upscale restaurant and lounge in Richmond, Virginia serving fresh and flavorful local favorites. Minibar RVA is an intimate place for craft cocktails and new American cuisine with a southern influence and international twist owned by Micha Crump. Soul Taco is a popular restaurant with locations in the historic African American Jackson Ward and Shockoe Slip neighborhoods blending traditional Latin American flavors with southern cuisine. Both locations are available for takeout and delivery directly through Soul Taco’s website from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

If you visit Charlottesville, Angelic’s Kitchen is a premier soul food truck serving up signature specialties such as fried fish dipped in the owner Angelic’s exclusive Southern style breading. Angelic will be serving customers in her food truck located on Pantops Mountain on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11-7 p.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for takeaway service or delivery from GrubHub and Uber Eats.
